Knowing your status allows you, your partner(s), and your community to stay protected and grow healthy!
Transmission of STIs, including HIV, mostly occur among people who are unaware of their status. If you are sexually active and/or sharing needles, it is recommended to get tested for STIs and HIV every 3 months or at least once a year, depending on your risk level. We offer testing to anyone who is at least 13 years old.

We may not have a cure, but prevention methods like PrEP and PEP offer an extra layer of advanced, reliable protection against HIV.
Before you have sex: Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a prevention method that requires taking a medication once a day to prevent HIV transmission. When taken correctly and consistently, PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection through sex by up to 92%. Your risk can be even lower if you combine PrEP with condoms and other prevention methods.
If you are sexually active and HIV-negative, PrEP can be an option for you.
If you think there is a chance you have been exposed to HIV: Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PEP, is an emergency medication that can help you reduce your risk for potential HIV transmission after being exposed. PEP should be used only in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after exposure. Think of it as the morning after pill to prevent HIV transmission.
If you think you have been recently exposed to HIV, talk to your health care provider, visit an emergency room, or contact us right away if you need help:

Receive personalized attention from a single-point of contact who can help you access the care and services you need.
AltaMed patients living with HIV are connected to a case manager, a single point of contact who is familiar with your unique needs and medical history. Case managers can assist with enrolling you into programs and finding resources that support your health.
No matter what stage of life you are in, our case managers can help you coordinate any medical care you may need. They can also help you access other support services – anything from getting help to pay for medications to helping with housing assistance and transportation. Remember, we are in this together.
If you are uninsured or underinsured, your case manager can help you enroll into health insurance through Medi-Cal or Covered CA, sign up for patient assistance programs like the Ryan White Program and the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), and/or find assistance for insurance premiums to help you receive low- to no-cost medical services, medications, and more to help you stay healthy.

Personalized pharmacy services provide medications for patients living with HIV and those using PrEP or PEP as an additional layer of protection.
As an AltaMed patient, you have access to a full range of medications through our on-site pharmacy at low or no cost. A pharmacist can consult with you to make sure you have the right medications, give you advice about potential side effects, and safeguard you from new medications potentially interacting with other prescriptions you are taking.
Because medication adherence is so important to staying healthy, we also offer adherence treatment education and monthly reminders for your refills. If eligible, free and confidential home delivery and mail services are available to you to help you stay on top of your health.
